ARTS: Washington Plaza Mural, 1991. The mural was the first large-scale El Puente mural project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn addressing the violence and decay of the community effected by crack. The mural, painted by El Puente young people under the direction of artist Joe Matunis, surrounded the walls of Washington Plaza where crack users and dealers regularly hung-out. The mural no longer exists after extensive renovation by the NYC Parks Department in collaboration with El Puente in 1996. The plaza was renamed Continental Plaza and is at the corner of S. 4th Street and Roebling Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Click on any of the thumbnails below to view a slideshow for each mural:
